Family reunions offer an excellent opportunity for share family history and learn about the past. The following family reunion activities will get everyone contributing, sharing and enjoying themselves to the fullest.

Memorabilia Stand

Put up a stand for the attending family members to display treasured memorabilia, these can be items such as historic family photos, GI medals, passed down jewelry, old family bible etcetera. Make sure all items on display are property and clearly marked and the table manned.

Oral History

Get someone with a camcorder or any reliable video capture device, if your budget allows get a professional in the field to interview a couple of older family members concerning the family history. Should you be hosting the event to honor a special occasion such as an anniversary for the grannies, then encourage people in attendance to focus their talk on the guest of honor.

Similarly, you could ask questions and other memories such as how life was in the ancient homestead. You'll be amazed at the different views that people have of the same place.

Family history Re-enactments

Use narrations from your family history recollections book to create skits and plays that people in attendance can participate in as a group; this is a very engaging family reunion activity. The skits can be staged at any place of significance to your family like at home, in the church, public parks, or even schools. Spectators can be engaged by participating in the designing of ancestral attires.

A Visit to the ancestral hometown

If you plan to host the family get-togethers near a place where your family originated from such as ancestral hometown, then you should organize a journey to the family old dwelling, cemetery or church. This offers the perfect time to reconnect with family memories; you can even take it a step further by mobilizing the clan to do some clean up in the ancient cemetery plots.

For those interested in learning more about the family history, then a visit to the ancestral church and researching the family records (this must be organized with the pastor prior to the visit) is a highly rewarding activity.

This is very good if you have some old family members alive. It provides a unique opportunity to listen to some exciting stories from the past regarding your family. If it doesn't offend anyone, then get someone to record the session on tape or video.

Heritage Recipes

Encourage family members to submit family cookbooks of old; this could be pass downs or even ones from their own families either obtained from an ancestor. Request them to include as much details as possible in the cookbooks or individual recipes, information such as memories of and photos of the old family members that created the recipes should be submitted too.

The submitted recipes can be bound into a nice family cookbook which can be used for family reunion fundraising for the upcoming year.
